Fact Sheet: Canaries

No licence required.

Type Varieties include: Border, Gloster, Norwich, Yorkshire, Lizard, Roller, Fife.

Colour Varieties include: Red Factor, Dimorphic, Variegated, White, Yellow, Buff, Cinnamon.

Many other colours and types have been bred.

FEEDING

DRY SEED MIXTURE: comprising millets and plain canary seed. Niger, rape, maw and hulled oats should be available. A reputable commercial brand of seed is sufficient for pet birds.

FRESH WATER: for drinking and bathing

REGULAR GREENS: such as milk thistle, endive, dandelion, seeding grasses, etc.

CUTTLEFISH, SHELLGRIT, CHARCOAL.

HOUSING

AVIARIES*: minimum height 60cm; 7200 sq.cm. first bird, add 3600sq.cm. per extra bird

CAGES*: minimum height 34cm; 1600 sq.cm. first bird, add 800 sq.cm. per extra bird

PLANTS: most individuals pick the leaves from the plants in the avairy. Beware of toxic plants

MIXING: generally tolerant of other birds.

*In Victoria, a Code of Practice for the housing of caged birds applies to the keeping of birds in captivity and requires you to provide adequate space, food, water, etc. for your birds. These codes are available from Agriculture Victoria.
